My Story of Survival

August of 1996, I went for my yearly mammogram. Nothing could have prepared me for the news that they spotted a tumor and told me to contact a surgeon as soon as possible. I was still in a daze the day I went to the Dr. and overheard the nurse say to another that I was a cancer patient. No, not me! Things like that happen to other people, not me.

I had a lumpectomy, lymph node dissection and 32 radiation treatments. I made it through with the support of my friends; especially my wonderful husband who was with me every step of the way. I am thankful everyday that I am cancer free, but I cannot let my guard down. I still get my annual mammogram and do self exam. NEVER take it for granted. A friend of mine had a reoccurrence after 22 years! Early detection is the answer.
